Hey team.
The parliamentary agenda (and by extension Clear the Lobby) has a funny place in the political news cycle. Sometimes it's entirely peripheral, and other times it's the story.
This week the latter is the case.
The Internal Market Bill hits the Commons.
As a whole, the Bill creates a legal framework for intra-UK trade after Brexit.
The controversial bit gives Northern Ireland unfettered access to the rest of the UK, and avoids discrimination against goods travelling to Great Britain.
This is problematic because it runs counter to the Northern Ireland protocol (part of the Withdrawal Agreement signed with the EU last year), which requires things like export declaration forms when moving goods from NI to GB.
The government has acknowledged the Bill would break international law.
This creates all sorts of problems, including damaging the UK's trustworthiness on the international stage, not least with any countries looking to sign trade deals.
Boris Johnson also faces the risk of a backbench rebellion.
If 40 or more Conservative MPs vote against the Bill, it won't pass.
There are also amendments, like the one from Sir Bob Neill, which allows Parliament to veto any government attempt to override the Withdrawal Agreement.
If the Bill does pass, it has two days of committee stage debate this week, and two days next week, before going to the Lords. That's where things could get really interesting, but that's a story for another day...
Until next week. In the meantime, feel free to tweet me, or just reply to this email.
